They provide much-needed assistance to help improve people\u2019s quality of life. Seventy-three percent of Canadians with disabilities report encountering <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www150.statcan.gc.ca\/n1\/pub\/89-654-x\/89-654-x2021001-eng.htm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accessibility barriers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, getting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/blog\/how-a-lawyer-can-help-with-your-short-term-disability-claim\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disability benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for visual disorders in Ontario may be harder than you might think. Benefit providers often do not realize or appreciate the seriousness of a vision disorder.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, they sometimes do not think of them as true medical conditions. However, if you have total blindness or meet the definition of being legally blind, then getting long-term<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/practice-areas\/long-term-disability\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> disability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> benefits is much more likely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is Considered Legally Blind in Canada?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/blog\/long-term-disability-for-blindness-or-vision-impairment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legally blind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not mean that you are completely blind. Those who are legally blind can still see some things, but their eyesight could be very narrow or extremely blurry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Canada, someone is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/revenue-agency\/services\/tax\/individuals\/segments\/tax-credits-deductions-persons-disabilities\/disability-tax-credit\/eligible-dtc\/vision.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">considered blind under the law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if their best eye has less than 20\/200 vision. This includes the help of contact lenses or glasses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To put that in perspective, it means that the person cannot see more than six meters (20 feet) in front of them. Normal vision allows you to see about 60 meters (200 feet) away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also be considered legally blind if your vision field is less than 20 degrees with the help of glasses or contacts. That means that you have trouble seeing on the sides (peripheral vision).<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because being legally blind is measured by your \u201cbest\u201d eye, you won\u2019t likely be considered disabled if you are only blind in one eye.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Common Causes of Vision Loss<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vision loss is the partial or complete loss of vision. Accidents, eye diseases, or age-related issues are common causes of vision impairment that may lead to blindness. Depending on the cause, sight loss could occur instantly or over time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the most common causes of sudden vision loss:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conjunctivitis or pinkeye<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keratitis or inflammation of the cornea<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Migraine<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye strain<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corneal abrasion or injury<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gradual vision loss usually occurs due to the following eye diseases:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glaucoma<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/183417\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetic retinopathy<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Age-related macular degeneration<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting Disability Benefits for Vision Impairment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being visually impaired means that you have less than 20\/20 vision. In fact, many people have some form of visual impairment, even if it is slight. However, only those who are actually or legally blind in Canada will be able to get benefits for their impairment in most circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term disability benefits are available for vision impairment. However, what an insurance company considers a disability when it comes to vision will vary.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your blindness inhibits your ability to work, you may qualify to get monthly benefits from your insurance company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You must be able to document that you have a severe vision impairment. Usually, this is done by taking a vision loss test. Your doctor will be able to give you this type of eye exam to determine your best possible corrected vision.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Functional Assessment for Visual Impairment<\/span><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some may not qualify for long-term disability benefits.
