This important discovery could help researchers identify new ways to fight disease.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers identified what they termed as \u201cmaster genes\u201d that are responsible for controlling hundreds of other genes. The genes controlled by these master genes are linked to several diseases and disorders including:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Autism<\/li>\r\n<li>Schizophrenia<\/li>\r\n<li>Post-traumatic stress disorder<\/li>\r\n<li>Depression<\/li>\r\n<li>Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/li>\r\n<li>Stroke<\/li>\r\n<li>Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/li>\r\n<li>Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UCLA biologists discovered that when a person suffers a traumatic brain injury, the master genes can be damaged leading to damage of other genes. The damage to other genes can occur in two ways that prevent the genes from working properly. The first is when the injury results in genes producing proteins of irregular forms.\u00a0 The second is when the number of expressed copies of a gene is changed in each cell.\u00a0 In either case, the damage could lead to the development of a disorder or disease.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Do Brain Injuries Occur?<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bist.ca\/brain-injury-101\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acquired brain injury<\/a>\u00a0(ABI) is an injury to the brain that occurs after birth. An ABI is not a genetic condition or a birth injury. ABI is caused in a variety of ways including an infection, brain tumor, or stroke. It can also be caused by external sources such as drug abuse, poisoning, or near drowning.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) are caused by blows to the head from external forces. A penetrating injury can also cause a traumatic brain injury. Events that can result in a TBI include motor vehicle accidents, head injuries during sports, falls, and physical assaults. TBIs can impact a person\u2019s ability to resume his normal life because he is unable to perform the same tasks as before the brain injury. Severe brain injuries may require life-long medical and personal care.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 500,000 Canadians will sustain a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bist.ca\/facts-about-abi\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">brain injury<\/a>\u00a0this year per one estimate. TBI is the leading cause of death and disability to Canadians under the age of 40 years. Once a person sustains a brain injury, that person is three times more likely to sustain a second brain injury and eight times more likely to sustain other bodily injuries. While traffic accidents cause over half of the acquired brain injuries, victims of other accidents can sustain a TBI.
