As a result, Ontario is increasing fines and penalties for distracted drivers. Before hitting the road, review all maps and directions. It\u2019s also a good idea to pre-program your route on a GPS or similar device.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Keep the vehicle clean.<\/strong>\u00a0Avoid using your car as a storage locker. A messy vehicle contains many distractions.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Stow and secure pets and loose objects.<\/strong>\u00a0If you find an item moving around, you\u2019re more likely to try and secure it while driving, creating a dangerous distraction.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Pre-set climate controls and the radio prior to driving.<\/strong><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While you\u2019re driving:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Take frequent breaks.\u00a0<\/strong>On long routes, it\u2019s natural for drivers to become restless and distracted. When possible, take a quick break and grab some fresh air.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Allow phone calls to go to voicemail.<\/strong>\u00a0If you haven\u2019t connected your phone to a hands-free device before you set off to your destination, allow your phone calls to go to voicemail.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Do not eat or drink.<\/strong>\u00a0If you\u2019re hungry or thirsty, pull over and take a break.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Do not text, surf the web or read emails.<\/strong>\u00a0This is one of the most common distractions.
