The purchase is expected to double the size of the existing network, as reported by&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-unveils-4-9-million-plan-to-expand-bike-share-toronto-1.3139643\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the Ontario Transportation Minister: &#8220;We know that cycling generates a broad range of economic, environmental, health, social and other benefits, which helps build healthy, more active and prosperous communities.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, there are plans in the works to expand bike lanes. According to the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/toronto\/toronto-moves-to-expand-downtown-bike-lanes-in-push-to-increase-safety\/article25010987\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Globe and Mail<\/a>, this comes only a few weeks after the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee backed a staff recommendation to expand bicycle infrastructure across Toronto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got to do more to connect the grid,\u201d said Jared Kolb of Cycle Toronto. \u201cWe need to do more for on-street safety.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Councillor Jaye Robinson, chair of the Public Works &amp; Infrastructure Committee, says the wheels are in motion to make it happen, but it will take time, and money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are rolling out this whole plan for a bike network that follows a grid system,\u201d she told&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.citynews.ca\/2015\/06\/15\/advocates-call-for-city-wide-bike-grid-after-3-cyclists-killed-in-2-weeks\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CityNews<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The importance of these infrastructure announcements cannot be understated. In the past two weeks, three cyclist deaths were reported with the latest being a hit-and-run in Yorkville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protected bike lanes will play a large part in bicycle safety for years to come.
