It’s often thought that car accidents and injuries are associated with winter driving conditions brought on by poor visibility and slippery conditions. However, the most severe injuries are caused by car accidents in summer months.

The Ministry of Transportation published an Ontario Road Safety Annual Report that provides statistics on fatalities and road injuries. The report shows that fatalities in summer months are much higher, approximately double, than in winter months. In 2011, the MTO reported that approximately 84% of fatalities occurred in bright skies with clear visibility opposed to slippery or poor conditions.

There are a few reasons for this. First, many families are more likely to be on the road in summer months. Having been stuck inside over the frigid winter, it’s time for travelling, camping and enjoying summer barbeques. Second, drivers are more likely to be distracted. In the summer months, you’re rolling your windows down, changing the radio station, and likely to be on your cell phone (possibly all at the same time). Lastly, not only do drivers have to worry about other cars on the road, they also need to be more cautious of pedestrians.

Sandra Zisckind and Diamond & Diamond Personal Injury Lawyers put together a few helpful driving tips to help in avoiding an unfortunate car accident this summer on the roads of Ontario:

On long trips, make sure to take frequent stops. A stretch break keeps the driver alert by promoting blood circulation.

Obey the speed limit. According to CAA, excessive speeds contribute to 20 percent of occupant fatalities.

Plan ahead and pack an emergency kit (i.e. flashlight, booster cables, tire puncture sealant, first-aid kit, flares, drinking water, etc…)

Reduce driver distraction. Often drivers are less aware of their surroundings when driving conditions are excellent. Focus on what’s in front of you.

If you or a loved one find themselves in a car accident or injury, call Diamond & Diamond Personal Injury Lawyers, Ontario Wide, at 1-800-567-HURT (4878) for professional guidance on how to proceed.

Now that spring is upon is, and only a few degrees below 0, it’s time to consider some important facts to stay safe this summer.
