Hundreds of coaches from 34 different sports have been convicted in the last 20 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We may not be completely aware, but sexual assault in sports is a prevalent issue in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since most people who join sports are the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspq.qc.ca\/en\/sexual-assault\/fact-sheets\/sexual-abuse-young-people-sport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> youth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are easily influenced by their coach and can lead to abuse of power and coach sexual abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f you or someone you know is at risk of coach sexual abuse, immediately reach out to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/compensation-for-victims-of-sexual-violence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual assault lawyer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Sadly, coach sexual abuse and other forms of coach sexual assault usually happen in gymnasiums, open fields, locker rooms, training sessions, and even in the homes of some coaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These young boys and girls look up to their coaches as role models. They tend to follow or allow whatever the coach&#8217;s advances are, not knowing they\u2019re already abused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What they don\u2019t know is the amount of trust they put in their coaches unknowingly makes them prey.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/49399332_Temporal_and_Developmental_Risk_Factors_for_Sexual_Harassment_and_Abuse_in_Sport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brackenridge (2001)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says that the relationship of trust is almost inevitable between a young athlete and a coach. Over time, as the level of trust increases, boundaries are also unknowingly crossed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In many cases, the trust is misused by coaches and persuades the young athletes into doing sexual activities with them. The abuser will find a way to lure the prey into the act and keep it a secret between them both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><b>The Perpetrators<\/b><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspq.qc.ca\/en\/sexual-assault\/fact-sheets\/sexual-abuse-young-people-sport#ref\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, people who have been found to sexually abuse young people had specific characteristics. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/49399332_Temporal_and_Developmental_Risk_Factors_for_Sexual_Harassment_and_Abuse_in_Sport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brackenridge et al. (2008)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mentioned that the offenders\u2019 ages ranged between 16-63 years old and that 98% of the abusers were teachers and coaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29% were married, and 31% had children and were primarily mainly male.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><b>The Victims\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minors and young adults (2%-8%) mainly comprise the victims of coach sexual assault. Most of these cases happened when a sport was played or when they were in the process of training and while doing different kinds of activities related to the sport.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was said that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspq.qc.ca\/en\/sexual-assault\/fact-sheets\/sexual-abuse-young-people-sport#ref\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">elite athletes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were likely to be victims of coach sexual abuse but had no clear indication that it was specific to a particular sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More notably, however, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspq.qc.ca\/en\/sexual-assault\/fact-sheets\/sexual-abuse-young-people-sport#ref\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that girls are more likely to be victims of coach sexual assault than boys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While a few young boys have been<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/practice-areas\/sexual-assault-lawyer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sexually abused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the number of girls who were sexually assaulted is more significant in number. One of the probable reasons is that boys don\u2019t report these incidents as much as girls do.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><b>Risk Factors in Coach Sexual Abuse<\/b><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2021\/08\/unnamed-3.png\" alt=\"Risk Factors in Coach Sexual Abuse\" width=\"512\" height=\"341\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10583 alignleft\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2021\/08\/unnamed-3.png 512w, https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2021\/08\/unnamed-3-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everyone, most especially young athletes, are vulnerable to sexual abuse in Canada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies suggest that specific characteristics, traits, or behavior may be identified but do not automatically equate to being sexually abused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, upon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspq.qc.ca\/en\/sexual-assault\/fact-sheets\/sexual-abuse-young-people-sport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the young athletes who have experienced coach sexual abuse, these are the five most consistent environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People involved in sports<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coach-athlete relationship<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Young athletes<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sports institutions and organizations<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The culture of sport<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you know someone who may have been a victim of sexual abuse in Canada?<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/free-case-evaluation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Reach out<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to us today.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 dir=\"ltr\"><b>Consequences and Prevention of Sexual Assault by Coaches<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><b>Consequences\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most sexual abuse cases, the effect on the victims is usually divided into two categories.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological Consequences: Social embarrassment, difficulty in establishing social ties, difficulty trusting other people, being distant from family and friends, substance use and abuse, lowered self-esteem, and questioning one\u2019s decision-making.<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical Consequences; Sleep disorder, eating disorder, and in many cases, their performance in sports is also affected. They may also leave their current mark to pursue a new one, completely stop their sport or lose commitment and interest.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\"><b>Prevention<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stricter implementation of penalties and a deeper focus should be in place for preventive measures to avoid the rising cases of sexual assault in Canada.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the things that could make things better are as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stringent implementation in sports organizations such as having more knowledgeable sports administrators through intensive training, and more visible and flexible support<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More stringent and rigorous background checks, behaviour management rules; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li dir=\"ltr\" style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disciplinary measures must be implemented upon infractions, steady an<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d trustworthy resources for the victims, known and reasonable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/diamondlaw.ca\/personal-injury\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complaints procedures.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also essential for school administrators to have zero tolerance for coach sexual assa<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ult. The behaviour should be outright unacceptable and shall be turned over to the authorities when an issue arises.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parents and guardians can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inspq.qc.ca\/en\/sexual-assault\/fact-sheets\/sexual-abuse-young-people-sport\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help prevent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a coach sexual assault from happening to their children.
